The Tobin Family in Ireland – 2012
John and Ellen’s eldest son, Patrick (Paddy) Tobin married ‘late’. He had been busy rearing his nieces and nephew. He and Ellen McDonald had an only child, John Brendan, (a daughter died at birth). John married Anne Downey in 1942 who gave birth to Jarlath (1943 – 2011), Mary Ann (1944 – 2008) and Aileen (1946 – ).
Jarlath and Ann have three sons – John (married to Ariane), Tom, who worked in Australia in 2012 and Brian. Living at Brosna, Birr, Co.Offaly, Jarlath worked as an Insurance Agent before his death from cancer on 26th October 2011.
Over the years, Jarlath answered many questions from his Australian cousins about their Irish ancestors. In July 2011, although critically ill, with the assistance of his wife Ann, he painstakingly answered Denise’s further queries including the family stories of Thomas’s brothers – Michael, who died at 24, his grandfather Patrick (Paddy) Tobin, who rescued three children from drowning in a lake and the machinations of the Daly family, who inherited John Robert Tobin’s wealth. Mary Ann took her final vows as a Mercy nun in 1988 in Limerick. Denise and her brother Barry Tobin attended her Final Profession. Over the years they corresponded regularly. Mary Ann died in November 2008 after a long illness with cancer.
Aileen and Mikie Cahalan, a retired dairy farmer, have four children. John (married to Olivia), Leo, Michelle (married to Aidan O’Dowd) and Carmel (married to James Croke). They have 6 grandchildren and live at Terryglass, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary.
Over many years, they have hosted visiting Tobin cousins. Their children Leo and Carmel have visited Australia and enjoyed some reciprocal hospitality from Australian cousins.
