Eveline Tobin

Eveline Tobin was the second daughter of John R. Tobin. The Census of Ireland, March 31^st 2001, shows her living in Brosna with her uncle, Pat Tobin and cousins Mary E. and Jas (James) Clavin. She was 14 and her occupation is described as a ‘Housekeeper – Domestic’.

Eveline followed her cousins and sister to New York on the Cedric to arrive on December 2nd, 1904. Her manifest states that she was 18 and a servant. Her last place of residence in Ireland was Tullamore, where her father John Robert Tobin had his Insurance Office. Her fare was paid by her sister Agnes, of Julia’s address.

Eveline married a Frederick Brown on March 3rd 1908 in the Church of the Blessed Sacrament (Julia Clavin’s Parish). The marriage certificate states she is 19, but in reality she would have been closer to 22. Her husband was 24. The witnesses were John and Agnes Tobin. [Judy Boyce]

Mary Tobin

Mary, the youngest daughter of John R. Tobin immigrated to New York on the Cedric to arrive on May 14th, 1907. She too was a servant and 18 years old. Her last place of residence was Ballymore, Co.Westmeath. Her fare was paid by her now married sister Mrs Agnes Tobin.

On reading young John Brendan Tobin’s Letter from Ireland to Winnie dated January 31st 1926 regarding his Uncle John Robert’s Will – it’s interesting to note how little money he left his brother Patrick and his 3 daughters. It begs the question whether he had much involvement in their childhood and it seems very natural that they followed the cousins to America, with whom they had grown up. However, according to Jarlath Tobin’s account (July 2011), John Robert’s daughters never kept in touch with their father from the U.S.A. The Daly family, with whom he boarded, certainly benefited from his wealth.

This website has been instrumental in finding Robert (Bob) Tobin in America, descendant of Agnes Tobin, the eldest daughter of John R. Tobin. Work is still afoot to find descendants of Eveline Tobin Brown and Mary Tobin.
