Mary Born March 13th 1866 in Francis Street Melbourne, Victoria – a narrow thoroughfare between Collins and Little Collins Street in the city of Melbourne. By the time she was registered 3 months later, the family were living in Elsternwick. Thomas’s occupation – Groom and Coachman.
Married Joseph Fitzgibbon July 5th 1892 in South Yarra, Victoria.
He was born in 1866 in Sale, Victoria and died in 1938 in West Brunswick.

Died July 12th 1931 in Brunswick, Victoria aged 65 years.
Julia Born December 19th 1867 at Willowbank in Gisborne Victoria. Her baptismal sponsors were Anne and John Sheedy, a young newly-married couple who were neighbours at nearby ‘Sheedy’s Swamp’. Thomas’s occupation – Overseerhead gardener?
At the time of Julia’s birth in Gisborne and baptism in St Brigid’s Church, the O’Dowds were occupying the gate house (lodge) of a large property where Thomas’s gentleman employer lived. After that employer returned to Ireland, the O’Dowds moved back to Melbourne. Barry Tobin (grand nephew of Julia) Parish Priest of St Brigid’s Church Gisborne (1979 – 1992).
Married Peter Murphy September 13th 1899 in South Yarra, Victoria. He was born in 1861 in Glasgow, Scotland and died in 1922 in Oakleigh, Victoria.
Children of Union Kathleen, Francis, Marie, Peter, Thomas, George, Julia and John.
Died October 1948 in Melbourne, aged 80 years.
Catherine Born January 1st 1870 at Whitmuir Hall Brighton, Victoria. Thomas’s occupation – Overseerhead gardener?
Whitmuir Hall is located in Yawla Street Bentleigh and now owned by the Bentleigh Club. It was the first and only ‘grand mansion’ in the area of East Brighton, now re-named Bentleigh. Whitmuir Hall was located on that part of Dendy’s Special Survey, (1841), known as ‘Dendy’s Farm’. The mansion was surrounded by about 158 acres. In the garden there were lovely marble statues and a fountain which still remain. Inside the home was a beautiful staircase and large, expensive stained glass windows, imported from Italy in the 1850s. Over many years Whitmuir Hall has undergone several name changes and had many owners, including being bought and sold twice by Sir Thomas Bent – Land Speculator and Premier of Victoria. Died May 24th 1876 of Infantile Remittent Fever (18 days) – aged six.
At the time of little Catherine’s death in 1876, the family were again living in the city. On her Death Certificate and in Sands and McDougall, the address is – off 137 Flinders Lane West near Spencer Street. She is buried with her parents in St Kilda Cemetery. Thomas’s occupation – Labourer.
Alice Born May 7th 1872 at Canterbury Road Toorak, Victoria. Thomas’s occupation – Gardener.
Married Thomas Tobin April 20th 1898 in Fremantle, Western Australia. He was born in Ireland on March 8th 1863 and died in East Camberwell, Victoria on July 6th 1953 aged 90 years. They had 9 children (3 died as infants) and he had 4 with his first wife (2 died as infants).
Children of Union Mollie, Leo, (Joseph), Alphonsus, (Bernard), Noel, Thomas, Kevin and (Catherine).
Died January 28th 1944 at Kent Street Ascot Vale aged 71 years.
Francis Born May 26th 1874 at Canterbury Road Toorak, Victoria. Thomas’s occupation – Coachman.
Married Mary Jane Lonie June 14th 1899 in St Kilda, Victoria. She was born in 1879 in St Kilda and died in 1940 in Ballarat, Victoria aged 61 years.
Children of Union James Andrew Francis (Frank), Thomas Richard, Ernest Patrick and John Augustine.
Died 1952 in Parkville, Victoria aged 78 years.
Kate Margaret (Maggie) Born October 14th 1876 at 139 Flinders Street, five months after the death of the first Catherine, she was her mother’s second namesake. According to Sands and McDougall, Maggie was born at the same address where Catherine died. Thomas’s occupation – Labourer.
Married Roger Vincent Morris October 23rd, 1907 in South Yarra, Victoria. He was born in 1878 in West Beach Tasmania and died in 1864 in Heidelberg, Victoria aged 86 years.
Children of Union Marie, Brendan, Margaret Philomena, Alice, Therese and Sylvester Owen.
Died February 21st 1965 in Melbourne, Victoria aged 87 years.
Eleanor (Ellen / Nell) Born September 2nd 1879 at Grieve Street Saint Kilda, Victoria. On her birth certificate, it states that Catherine was 41 and Thomas 37. Catherine was probably 44 or older. Thomas’s occupation – Coachman.
Married John Benedict Shanahan January 10th 1906 in South Yarra, Melbourne. He was born in 1879 in Carlton, Victoria and died in 1961 in West Brunswick, Victoria aged 82 years. They had 9 children and her grandchildren lovingly refer to her as ‘Nine‘.
Children of Union Bernard, Sheila, Clare, Mary Magdalen, Patricia, Ellen, Monica, John and Francis.
Died December 1954 in West Brunswick, Victoria aged 74 years.
