The (Tobin) Clavin Family in the U.S.A from 1900

For a personal journey of discovery, read The Search for our American Cousins written by my brother, Father Barry Tobin.

Mike and Judy Boyce, who live in Seattle, Washington State, U.S.A. have taken great interest in The Undertakers’ Mother. They hosted my daughter Veronica and me, when we visited their home in June 2010 and have generously shared any factual information that they have discovered with their family tree research. I thank them very sincerely. [Denise]

Clavin Marriage Certificate, Ireland 1880Julia Tobin was Thomas’s youngest sister. She was born about 1864 and when about 16 years old, she married a neighbouring farmer’s son, James Clavin in Dublin 1880. Sadly, he died of influenza in 1885, leaving Julia with Mary Ellen born March 12th, 1881 and James born April 18th, 1884 in England. She returned to her childhood home in Brosna. In 1900, she immigrated to New York in the United States of America.

It is not known how long she lived with her parents in Ireland, but her shipping Manifest at Ellis Island, New York records her last place of residence as being at Roscrea, a few miles from Birr. The records give her occupation as a servant. Her end address is New York with no mention of a residential address. She travelled on the Campania to arrive on November 24th, 1900.

It’s sad to note that her mother Ellen died only 6 weeks later on January 6th 1901 in Ireland.

Julia’s home obviously became the Hub of the Immigrant Irish Clavin/Tobins to New York. Within the space of a few years, she was joined by her two children and her niece, Agnes Tobin. Shortly after her arrival in New York, Mary Ellen met John Boyce and it appears that they lived with Julia. The address on the Baptismal Certificate of Mary Ellen’s first born child, John Francis (Frank) Boyce dated February 7th, 1904 is 444 West 58th Street New York.
